In the late evening hours of Friday February 3rd, 2023 a 150 car train suffered a partial derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. During this incident, 51 train cars derailed with 11 of those 51 carrying hazardous materials. Images and videos of the derailment, subsequent hazardous materials incident including initial fire and controlled burn off, and clean-up have been seen across every digital and print media since the incident. In the wake of this derailment, rail traffic and transport on a national level has been under severe scrutiny.
On a local level, the Fire Company and community leaders have fielded questions with concerns to the rail line that runs directly though the community. We hear and understand these concerns. Chief David Majewski, Jr. and Captain Tim Moore will be addressing these concerns and discussing preparedness efforts during a special presentation to New Castle City Council at the May 9th meeting. The meeting will begin at 7pm at the New Castle Senior Center located at 400 South Street, New Castle, DE.
